Palm Oil: From Food to Fuel – Trends and challenges of a hotly contested crop

Palm oil is ubiquitous in our everyday lives, as it can be used in food and chemical products as well as in fuels. Global production has multiplied within a few years and continues to rise. One reason for this is the high productivity of oil palms, which enables the production of large quantities of comparatively cheap vegetable oil. However, in both main cultivation countries, Indonesia and Malaysia, the ecological and social downsides of the conversion of many millions of hectares of rainforest into plantations are also apparent, but a much more sustainable cultivation of oil palms would be possible.
